Billy Hart Quartet - One Is the Other (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88.2kHz

Artist: Billy Hart Quartet
Title: One Is the Other
Genre: Jazz, Post-Bop, Modern Creative
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player
Release Date: 2014
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 88,2kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:51:31
Recorded: April and May 2013 at Avatar Studios, New York

The second ECM album by the Billy Hart Quartet is a major musical statement, and one of the outstanding jazz albums of the season. The group’s reach – already broad on 2011’s widely-acclaimed All Our Reasons – is yet more expansive here. Strong compositions – by leader-drummer Hart, tenorist Mark Turner and pianist Ethan Iverson – reflect upon a wide swathe of the music’s history, and are distinguished by vivid and imaginative solos and wonderful interplay. A basic premise, that this should be a band in which the vastly-experienced Billy Hart gets to play everything he wants to play, has led to a sense of almost unlimited possibility for all participants. There is freedom and joy in this music, and tenderness, too, not least in the set’s sole standard, a beautifully played version of “Some Enchanted Evening.” Recorded in New York in 2013, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Bela Bartok - Bluebeard’s Castle - Budapest Festival Orchestra, Ivan Fischer (2011) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Artist: Budapest Festival Orchestra, Iván Fischer
Title: Bartók - Bluebeard’s Castle
Genre: Classical

Recorded: 16-19 August 2002 at Italian Institute, Budapest

Despite occasional successful stagings of this opera, it is concert performances that stir up the feelings of audiences most. I have witnessed many times in performances of this psycho-drama that listeners, staring at the faces of the two singers for sixty minutes, or following a surtitled or printed libretto translation during Bartók’s deeply emotional music, were confronted with themselves. The prologue is very important; this is in fact a story about us. Usually, after the opera has ended, discussions break out, dividing men and women. Whereas everybody seems
to understand why Judit cannot resist her desire to open all the doors, Bluebeard’s character remains controversial. Is it right or wrong, necessary or unnecessary to keep certain doors closed? Why does he need to lock Judit up after she has discovered his secrets? Is the blood real, or does it exist only in Judit’s fearful imagination?
This Bluebeard is not a killer, even if he has a bad reputation and Judita sees blood everywhere. All the earlier wives are alive in his heart, behind closed doors. Bartók, who was himself a closed, shy man, seems to have been fascinated by strange-looking characters who turn out to feel endless love. This links Bluebeard to the Miraculous Mandarin.
I am very grateful to Mr Vikárius and Mr Somfai of the Bartók archive in Budapest, who drew my attention to a number of errors in the printed score which we have been able to correct in this new recording.
I also want to thank the Budapest State Opera, who lent us the very rare keyboard xylophone which gives the torture chamber scene its authentic colour. --Iván Fischer

Guitar virtuoso Albert Cummings’ latest studio album, Someone Like You, was recorded in Los Angeles with Grammy-winning producer David Z. (Buddy Guy, Prince, Jonny Lang, Gov’t Mule) at the helm. Said Z, “Albert Cummings writes, plays and sings the blues like nobody else. What a blast to watch him jell in the studio with some of the best musicians in Los Angeles.”
One of those musicians was special guest Jimmy Vivino, leader of the Basic Cable Band on the Conan TV show, and Albert’s Blind Pig labelmate, who appears on three tracks.
Master builder turned master guitarist, Albert has become a favorite of fans who love soulful, explosive rocking blues. Double Trouble, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rhythm section, was so impressed with Albert’s talent that they volunteered to play on and produce his debut recording in 2003.
Since then he’s established a reputation as a rare talent renowned for his uniquely muscular yet polished guitar wizardry. Billboard said his “guitar work is sizzling.” Guitar One exclaimed, "He attacks his axe with unbridled ferocity and deep soulfulness.”
Cummings said of the new album and the L.A. recording process, "I'm tremendously excited about this CD and the team of people that will be working this record. It was such a pleasure to also work with David Z and Jimmy Vivino and so exciting to share their excitement about the potential this record has."
