June Tabor, Iain Ballamy, Huw Warren - Quercus (2013) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44.1kHz

Artist: June Tabor, Iain Ballamy, Huw Warren
Title: Quercus
Genre: Jazz, Folk, Celtic, British Folk, Modern Creative, Modern Jazz Vocals, Traditional Folk
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player
Release Date: 2013

‘Quercus’ means ‘oak’ in Latin and the roots of this particular tree dig deep into British folk music, while leaves and branches reach upward to embrace jazz-inspired lyrical improvising. The trio features the venerable English singer June Tabor whose dark voice has an uncanny ability to underscore the emotional essence of a ballad: “As I get older, I understand more the depths of sorrow and joy that made the song”, she has said. Tabor, who was recently voted BBC Folk Awards Singer Of The Year, is joined in the Quercus project by Welsh jazz pianist and composer Huw Warren, and by English saxophonist Iain Ballamy, well-known to ECM listeners as co-leader of the band Food. This is the first Quercus album but the trio has existed already for seven years, patiently developing its unique idiomatic blend.

Julia Hulsmann Quartet & Theo Bleckmann - A Clear Midnight / Kurt Weill And America (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Julia Hülsmann Quartet & Theo Bleckmann
Title: A Clear Midnight / Kurt Weill And America
Genre: Jazz
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player | ECM Reviews
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 01:07:58
Recorded: June 2014 at Rainbow Studio, Oslo

Pianist Julia Hülsmann and singer Theo Bleckmann, in a first – and long-awaited – collaborative recording, celebrate the “unsung Weill” alongside the master’s best-loved works including “Mack The Knife”, “Speak Low” and “September Song”, adding also Julia’s settings of Walt Whitman, with whom Kurt Weill felt an affinity. The project came together at the instigation of the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau in 2013 and since then has gained new life on the road and been fine-tuned in this studio recording made in Oslo in June 2014 with Manfred Eicher as producer. It marks a musical advance for the Hülsmann group at a number of levels, and these recastings of Weill open up new imaginative possibilities for the players. English trumpeter and flugelhornist Tom Arthurs, who made his debut with Hülsmann on In Full View is fully integrated on A Clear Midnight. Often his trumpet doubles or underpins Bleckmann’s singing, giving a new colour to the vocals. As for Theo Bleckmann, this is the sensitive vocalist’s first ECM appearance as a jazz singer, although he has recorded twice for the label as a member of the Meredith Monk ensemble on “Mercy” and “Impermanence”.

Jokleba - Outland (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: JøKleBa
Title: Outland
Genre: Jazz
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player
Release Date: 2014
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:47:29
Recorded: May 2014, Madstun, Fall / Rainbow Studio, Oslo

The Norwegian trio Jøkleba was formed in 1990, establishing itself as one of the most unpredictable groups on the Scandinavian scene. The present disc – the fifth Jøkleba album, but the first for ECM – finds old friends Jørgensen, Balke and Kleive working with pulse and colour and texture in collective music-making, emphasizing electronics, trumpet and voice, in freely created pieces which hint at relationships between inspiration and instability. Track titles make reference to writings by Sylvia Plath, Laura Restrepo, Sadegh Hedayat, Guy de Maupassant and Ken Kesey, in particular to their descriptions of the disintegration of identity, “the human mind when it gets lost”, as Jon Balke puts it. All three musicians have recorded prolifically for ECM in a wide variety of contexts, but the particular chemistry of Jøkleba is unique unto itself.

Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit

Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, iconic musician and actor JD Souther releases his new album Tenderness via Sony Music Masterworks. Produced by Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Herbie Hancock), the album will be available on May 12, 2015.
"JD Souther is both a legendary and mysterious figure in American popular music," says Chuck Mitchell, SVP of Sony Music Masterworks. "He's a self-described 'classicist' who, in his new work, draws a through line between the first great songbook of Porter, Kern, etc., and his own generation's massive impact on the art of the song. The result is an album that brings a new and fresh perspective to this amazing singer-songwriter's contributions."
"Now there are many ways to listen to music, and my intention is, as always, that each song tell its own story," adds Souther. "However, Tenderness is designed as a set. I invite you to enjoy it this way."
"JD Souther proves once again why he's an American treasure," says Irving Azoff, the music industry icon whose company manages Souther.
Called "an American songwriting treasure" (Creative Loafing), with a "musical history that is improbably rich" (San Diego Union Tribune), Souther's Tendernesscontinues the new path in sound and style that he has forged since his return to recording in 2008; but at the same time, the album is unlike anything he has previously recorded. Joining Souther on guitar and vocals are longtime collaborators pianist Chris Walters and saxophonist Jeff Coffin; as well as new friends, vocalist Lizz Wright and trumpet master Till Bronner. Jazz piano legend and recent Grammy Award winner Billy Childs is on board as well; he also has arranged the elegant and searing strings on half the album's tracks.
On Tenderness, Souther balances his pop and jazz sensibilities paying particular homage to his earliest influences, the geniuses of the 20th Century Great American Songbook, while maintaining the signature qualities that have made him one of the true contemporary giants of American song.
Souther is best known penning countless hits for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Roy Orbison, James Taylor, Don Henley, George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, Brooks and Dunn and others; while establishing a cult following as a performer with the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band and as a solo artist.

Giovanni Guidi Trio - This Is the Day (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Giovanni Guidi Trio
Title: This Is the Day
Genre: Jazz
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player | ECM Reviews
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 01:13:16
Recorded: Auditorium Stelio Moro of the Swiss Radio and Television, in Lugano, in April 2014

The Giovanni Guidi Trio plays jazz of uncommon originality and reflective depth. On their second ECM album, Italian pianist Guidi, US bassist Morgan, and Portuguese drummer Lobo continue the work begun on the 2011 recording City of Broken Dreams, with pensive, abstract ballads which shimmer with inner tension. Each of the players has a strong sense for the dialectics of sound and silence. The repertoire is mostly from Guidi’s pen, but also includes the standard “I’m Through With Love”, Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés’ “Quizás, quizás, quizás” (familiar to jazz listeners through, above all, Nat King Cole’s version), and “Baiiia” by João Lobo.

Giovanni Guidi Trio - City Of Broken Dreams (2013) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

Title: City Of Broken Dreams
Genre: Jazz

Release Date: 2013
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 48kHz/24bit

Duration: 52:05
Recorded: December 2011, Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano

Pianist Giovanni Guidi (born 1985), is one of the most outstanding musicians to have emerged from the ranks of Italian jazz in the last decade and has already made his presence felt on Enrico Rava’s “Tribe” and “On The Dancefloor” albums. Rava praises both Guidi’s “limitless curiosity” as an improviser and his “relentless refinement” of touch and musical taste, and the pianist continually proves that those qualities are not opposites. His first leader date for ECM is a glowing collection of self-penned tunes, simultaneously inner-directed and creatively daring, with many adroit exchanges between the musicians and plenty of space given also to bassist Thomas Morgan, whose role in the Guidi Trio is perhaps analogous to Scott LaFaro’s in the Evans Trio. Portuguese drummer João Lobo is another highly original musician, poetically shading the music with a delicate tracery of cymbals.
