The full title of this album gives a good overview of its contents and artistic intent: the Christmas story told in chant, motets, dialogues and traditional folk carols. Listeners should be aware that it's not a playful CD of "fun" holiday music, but a serious, thoughtfully assembled collection of Christmas music spanning the history of the Western European tradition, from plainchant to contemporary anthems and arrangements made especially for this album. Its format is based loosely on the Anglican service of Nine Lessons and Carols. Theatre of Voices, a mixed vocal quartet supplemented by organ and theorbo (or guitar), sings four lessons, three Biblical stories in Baroque Italian settings, plus the traditional We Three Kings. The carols, traditionally sung by the choir or congregation at the Christmas Eve service, are sung a cappella by the chamber choir, Ars Nova Copenhagen. The performances, led by Paul Hillier, are absolutely first-rate. Theatre of Voices, an ensemble of soloists, sings with exquisite purity, intonation, blend, and balance. Ars Nova Copenhagen has the same outstanding musical strengths, but simply by virtue of the relative size of the group, it makes a dramatic contrast in its contributions, which take up the bulk of the album. In spite of its size -- only four singers on a part -- it produces a wonderfully robust sound. The variety of the repertoire and the exceptionally high performance standards make this an album that should be attractive to anyone looking for a quality survey of Christmas music through the ages. The sound of Harmonia Mundi's hybrid SACD is clean, well-balanced, and natural. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Eddins

Artist: Vanessa Paradis
Title: Love Songs Tour
Genre: Pop
Label: © Barclay
Release Date: 2014
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 02:19:58
Recorded: 2013-14

Known in America primarily for her film and modeling careers, Vanessa first captured attention for her impressive musical debut in 1987. Her single, “Joe le Taxi,” reached Number 1 on the charts in multiple countries when she was only 14 years old. In the years since, she has continued to earn acclaim as a singer, serving as muse to such varied songwriters and producers as Serge Gainsbourg, Lenny Kravitz and, most recently, the French electropop star Matthieu Chedid (who performs as “—M—”). Her recent studio album Divinidylle won her two major Victoires de la Musique awards (the French equivalent of Grammys): Album of the Year and Female Singer.

Best Of features Paradis’ most recognizable songs from a career that spans just over twenty years along with previously unreleased bonus tracks including “Il Y A” (There Is) and the Cole Porter classic “I Love Paris”. Another selection from the impressive track listing is “Be My Baby” -- written and produced by American rock musician Lenny Kravitz on her self-titled English language album.

As she has proven time and again with her continued international success, Vanessa Paradis’ instrument is one that transcends borders and language by conveying a refreshing purity that has become so rare in a world of manufactured talent. She will no doubt continue to win fans by bringing her greatest hits stateside and performing for lucky audiences in New York and Los Angeles.

An internationally renowned story-teller, singer-songwriter and vocalist Yasmin Levy should really need no introduction. Over the course of five remarkable albums and countless world tours, her deep spiritual singing and passionate vocal delivery have made her that rarity, a true international star. Tango is thus Levy’s sixth album and whilst her preceding one, Libertad, established her as a singer-songwriter of real repute, drawing heavily on the influences of both Spanish and Turkish music as well as featuring her trademark Ladino songs, here she introduces us to another of her great passions, with an album, and accompanying concert DVD, of sublimely arranged and passionately performed Argentinean Tango. It is a brave move, but one that shouldn’t surprise us. For Levy is an artist who refuses to stand still, from her breakthrough as a re-inventor of Ladino, via her forays into Persian and Turkish song and her own flamenco influenced originals, she is an artist always on the lookout for new challenges, new ways to express the melancholic beauty at the heart of her beguiling art.

Unlike the majority of his Russian predecessors, Tchaikovsky's fame meant he received regular commissions for new work—he was the first 'professional' Russian composer. A new generation followed in his footsteps including Stravinsky and Prokofiev; for them, commissions were the norm.
Many of the works for which Tchaikovsky was commissioned were required to celebrate great state and political events. The Danish Overture was written to mark the marriage of the future Tsar Alexander III to the Danish Princess Dagmar. He was later commissioned to to produce the rarely-heard Moscow Cantata and Coronation March as part of the celebrations to mark Alexander's coronation.

and 6–10, 2014, in Nichols Concert Hall at the Music Institute of Chicago, Evanston, Illinois

Francesco Maria Veracini (1690–1768) was the foremost figure in a generation of renowned virtuosi, including Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770), Pietro Locatelli (1695–1764), and Jean-Marie Leclair (1697–1764), who revolutionized the art of violin playing in the early 18th century. All four of these figures dazzled audiences throughout Europe with their astonishing performances. They raised the bar for instrumental soloists with their prolific production of fine and difficult music for the violin, works that daringly expanded the compass of expression and acrobatic performance on the instrument. Veracini’s place as leader of this violinistic ‘rat pack’ ism suggested by the fact that both Locatelli and Tartini, though only slightly younger, took inspiration from his playing and teaching, and Leclair’s path-breaking mature works are in turn, indebted to Locatelli. Veracini’s achievement is crowned and his legacy best preserved in his Opus 2 of 1744, the set of twelve Sonate Accademiche, a work of uniquely varied inspiration and majestic scope.

Appearing after a 23-year gestation (Opus 1 was published in 1721), the sonatas of Veracini’s Opus 2 represent a zenith of the genre, on a scale of sheer length attempted never before and not soon after. These sonatas are fully half again as long as their nearest rivals (the sonatas of Tartini and Locatelli) and they explode the possibilities of the genre, essaying a variety of designs and content unlike any other sonata collection of the era.

At the crossover of rock, Armenian folk, metal and jazz, the 26 year old pianist proves that he has everything it takes for greatness.

“He plays piano like a raga, the next Keith Jarrett”. --Trilok Gurtu “Tigran really grabbed me, because it’s got several things going on at once. It has a really wild odd-meter thing, and this distorted, aggressive piano treatment. And the harmony is kind of jazz-fusiony.' --Brad Mehldau “A..may..zing! Now, Tigran, you are my teacher!” --Herbie Hancock

Bedrich Smetana - The Bartered Bride - BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers, Jiri Belohlavek (2012) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

Сomposer: Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884)
Artist: BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers, Jiří Bělohlávek
Title: Smetana - The Bartered Bride
Genre: Classical
Label: © Harmonia Mundi
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 48kHz/24bit
Duration: 135:58
Recorded: May 2011, Barbican Centre, London, UK

A classic! And yet Smetana was thoroughly irritated by the torrents of praise lavished, in the last years of his life, on this Bartered Bride which had been categorically rejected at its premiere (1866) by a Czech public waiting to hear the genuine national opera. Four versions of the work later, and after many critical complaints (sometimes it was found too long, sometimes too short), it was realised that the composer had given birth to a genre built to last. For nearly 150 years now, The Bartered Bride has triumphed in opera houses all over the world; and in the present recording it is in the hands of a true team of experts.
