The Fifth Symphony (1901-02) itself demonstrates Mahler’s principle of “progressive tonality,” moving from a Funeral March to a jubilant sense of triumph in D Major. In the course this monumental score, divided into three parts, Mahler juxtaposes the most extreme emotions and musical forms: learned counterpoint and simple country laendler, vociferous anger and grotesque fantasies, and grateful love and appreciation of Nature and human affection.
If martial energy and resentment dominate the first two movements, a blissful or triumphant note emerges from the chorale motifs later in the score, even anticipated, in the stormy second movement, when pantheistic and visionary elements in the brass interrupt the dreadful impetus of the music. In a letter to his wife, Alma, Mahler expressed his own reaction to the originally-scored brass turbulence: “Heavens, what is the public to make of this chaos in which new worlds are forever being engendered, only to crumble into ruin the next moment? What are they to say to this primeval music, this foaming, roaring, raging sea of sound, to these dancing stars, to these breathtaking, iridescent, and flashing breakers?”

Drummer Otis Brown III – an invaluable sideman with the likes of Esperanza Spalding, Joe Lovano, Terence Blanchard, Oliver Lake, Somi, and others – has announced the release of his debut album The Thought of You via Revive/Blue Note.
Brown’s maiden voyage features an impressive roll call of artists including a core band consisting of pianist Robert Glasper, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, saxophonist John Ellis, and bassist Ben Williams, with organist Shedrick Mitchell and guitarist Nir Felder making special appearances. Singers Bilal, Gretchen Parlato, and Nikki Ross contribute standout performances that underscore the sentiments of the album’s co-producer, Derrick Hodge, who says, “Otis has become one of those drummers who once you hear him play, his experience becomes your experience in the moment.”
“Everything on this record is a part of me,” says Brown of the 11-track set which features originals from Brown and his bandmates as well as unexpected covers. The album embodies the essence of what Brown holds most dear: faith and family. These themes run throughout from a stunning gospel medley featuring Ross to the reinvention of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One” – one of two dedications to Brown’s wife – which is given a complete makeover with a new arrangement by Glasper and a moving vocal performance by Parlato

There’s a certain power in classic soul music–a blend of gospel, blues and folk that can heal the soul in a very real way. That’s exactly what’s at work in “River,” the spacious love song from Texas songwriter Leon Bridges. Built of acoustic guitar, tambourine and (most importantly) Bridges incredible vocals, “River” sings of redemption in the waters of love. It might be a baptism, it might be a first kiss, or it might be the moment when the world heals its wounds–whatever Bridges might be seeking on “River,” it’s a heaven that all of us hope for.
Bridges has been rising in stature for some time now, thanks in no small part to his incredible voice and knack for arrangements that transport us to a bygone era. The 25 year-old singer is often compared to Sam Cooke–and it’s a fair point: his work holds that same soothing quality that’s kept “A Change is Gonna Come” playing strong after all this time. “River” will appear on Bridges’s upcoming debut album, „Coming Home“.
At a time when music’s healing qualities feel more necessary than ever, “River” is a piece of perfect timing from an artist who seems destined for greatness. Listen to it below and give yourself up to sound.

Jacintha - Jacintha Is Her Name: Dedicated To Julie London (2003) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Artist: Jacintha
Title: Jacintha Is Her Name: Dedicated To Julie London
Genre: Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Standards, Smooth Jazz, Traditional Pop
Label: © Groove Note Records
Release Date: 2003
Quality: DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz
Source: ISO SACD
Duration: 00:53:22
Recorded: November 20-24, 2002 at OceanWay Recordings, Hollywood, CA.

Julie London, the legendary torch song singer and pop balladeer of the 60s and early 70s, passed away in Los Angeles two years ago. The singer who had a huge hit with her version of Cry Me A River still retains a large fan base worldwide and has always been one of Jacintha's favorite singers. It only seems natural that for this, her fourth album for Groove Note, the sensual and talented Jacintha, no mean balladeer herself, has chosen to record and dedicate an album to Julie.
"This album is a sheer joy to listen to from the first note. This may be Jacintha's best album yet. The silky, smooth, and sensuous voice of Jacintha is reproduced with an utterly natural quality, revealing every nuance of her phenomenal intonation, phrasing, breath control, and vocal modulation." - Dave Glackin, Positive Feedback Online
Inspired mainly by Ms. London's first Liberty album, Julie Is Her Name and its spare guitar and acoustic bass formats, Jacintha and arranger/pianist Bill Cunliffe (recently nominated for a Jazz Arranging Grammy) have come up with a spectacular new record. Using the guitar and bass combo as a basic springboard, the album has taken some of the songs most closely associated with Ms. London (e.g. Cry Me A River, and some not so familiar like Light My Fire), and transformed them into the kind of material that Jacintha handles best. Intimate, sexy, seductive.
A couple of tunes do utilize a trio behind Jacintha but the great majority of the songs stay faithful to the guitar/bass combo and two instrument concept with the additional twist of using some different instruments in the arrangements. (e.g. sax and bass for Willow Weep For Me, sax and piano for Something Cool and piano and bass for Cry Me A River). Jacintha herself delivers some definitive performances including a classic version of Something Cool and her cover of The Doors' Light My Fire.
The very spare instrumental arrangements also lend themselves to extremely high quality audiophile sound and Joe Harley (producer) and Mike Ross (engineer) have outdone themselves on this recording, creating sonics and fidelity that are some of the best ever from Groove Note.

Johann Sebastian Bach - Cello Suites BWV 1007-1012 - David Watkin (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Сomposer: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Artist: David Watkin
Title: J.S. Bach - Cello Suites BWV 1007-1012
Genre: Classical
Label: © Resonus Limited
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit

Duration: 02:24:41
Recorded: The Robin Chapel, Edinburgh on 26 March, 19 June, 21-22 June & 10-12 December 2013

Renowned cellist and interpreter of Baroque music David Watkin records the Cello Suites by J.S. Bach, rightly considered as the pinnacle of writing for solo cello. Juror of the Leipzig Bach Competition; former principal cellist of the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique & the English Baroque Soloists, as well as the cellist of the critically acclaimed Eroica Quartet, Watkin gives a captivating and truly individual account of the six suites, the result of decades of performing and studying these compelling and fascinating works.
The six Suites are recorded on gut strings and on two original historic instruments of note, including the unique five-string cello by Brothers Amati, dating from c. 1600, and a four-string by a likely pupil of Amati, Francesco Rugeri, dating from c. 1670.
„From first hearing the Toccata and Fugue in d minor as a child, to taking part in the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage in 2000 and sitting on the Jury at the Leipzig Bach Competition in 2012, Bach has always had a special place in my life. But 2013 is turning out to be a ‘Bach year’ for me. A few weeks ago I took part in Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s TV programme (which will be broadcast at Easter by the BBC). I recorded the G major Prelude and gave some interviews, but more importantly it was a great chance to catch up with some of the other participants from the incredible Bach Cantata Pilgrimage 2000. Also in Cantata 68, there was a chance to try out the Royal Academy of Music’s beautiful 5 string Amati cello which belonged to one of my teachers, Amarylis Fleming. It’s an astonishing instrument, and I’m very excited to be using it for the 6th Suite later this year.
Earlier this year I conducted the 3rd and 4th Orchestral Suites at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, with their Baroque Orchestra – every one of them ready to risk everything for the music! Then it was Webern’s arrangement of the Ricercar in 6 parts from the Musical Offering with SCO and Robin Ticciati. In the Summer there is a late night Prom with EBS/Gardiner, and in the run up to Christmas I’m performing the 6th Suite at Queen’s Hall and then conducting Cantata 110 Unser Mund sei Voll Lachens in a concert with Manchester Consort.
But my main focus in 2013 will be a recording for Resonus Classics of all 6 Suites, which will happen in two chunks, Spring and Winter. In preparation, I will be putting on as many performances of the Suites as possible, as well as introducing and exploring them at various events.
Having performed the Suites at very special places in Bach's life - sitting by the font in which he was baptised in Eisenach and at Frederick the Great's Palace in Potsdam - it was a pleasure to play the First Suite recently at Leighton House in London. Alfredo Piatti was a regular performer at 'Musics' there, including perhaps some of the first performances of the Suites after Bach's lifetime.

Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick (1972/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Jethro Tull
Title: Thick As A Brick
Genre: Art Rock, Hard Rock, Prog Rock
Label: © Chrysalis Records
Release Date: 1972/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks
Duration: 43:43
Recorded: December 1971 at Morgan Studios, London
Mixed & Mastered by Steven Wilson

While never as high-minded or technically facile as the likes of Yes or ELP, Tull began incorporating complex time changes, sophisticated harmonic structures and highly developed lyrical themes on „Thick As A Brick“, the realization of the artistic growth begun on „Aqualung“. It's here that Tull finally bursts into full-blown prog-rock mode. While „Aqualung“ was a group of discrete compositions united by a theme, „Thick As A Brick“ consists of one extended piece that occupies the length of the album.
Lyrically, Anderson's intentions are a bit more obscure here, but the sophisticated arrangements and virtuosic performances are enough to carry the show. John Evan's piano and organ are at the heart of this complex piece, which moves through an endless succession of tempos, moods and modes in a manner similar to vintage Genesis or the aforementioned Yes, but with a grittier edge. Most importantly, the whole things flows in a cohesive manner. „Thick As A Brick“ demands close attention, but rewards the same handsomely.
'...their music spins a delicate web of sensitive sounds: sometimes lilting, sometimes soaring to form a brilliant backdrop for the meaningful lyrics and improvisational techniques...' --Rolling Stone

Jeff Beck's Live + is a new live album spanning the legendary guitarist's vast and varied career, along with two new studio tracks. Jeff Beck earned raves last year for his spellbinding performances during the hugely successful double-bill tour with ZZ TOP. Fans can relive Beck’s thrilling guitar gymnastics from those shows with a new live album that touches on key eras from the legendary artist’s influential career. The album captures a snapshot of Jeff’s work in 2014, with two newly recorded studio tracks also included, his first new music since 2010’s Grammy®-winning Emotion & Commotion.
The 14 live performances on Live + were recorded at multiple venues in 2014 and feature Beck backed by his band: vocalist Jimmy Hall, bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Jonathan Joseph and guitarist Nicolas Meier. The quintet explored Beck’s vast catalog—which stretches across five decades—with performances of “Morning Dew” (from Truth, 1968), “Superstition” (from Beck, Bogert, Appice, 1973), “Big Block” (from Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop, 1989), as well as two Grammy-winning tracks: his cover of the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life” and “Hammerhead.”
Live + concludes with two new studio tracks: “Tribal” and “My Tiled White Floor,” with guest vocals from Ruth Lorenzo and Veronica Bellino, respectively. These aggressive new songs mark Beck’s first studio recordings since 2010 and show a stark departure from the sound on his previous album as the guitarist continues to push the envelope of musical innovation, just as he has his entire career. These tracks are sure to whet the appetite of Beck fans as the guitarist prepares his 17th studio album, which is expected later this year.
