Mark Turner Quartet - Lathe Of Heaven (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88.2kHz

Release Date: 2014
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 88,2kHz/24bit
Duration: 58:12
Recorded: June 2013, Avatar Studios, New York

Mark Turner is one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, renowned for his exploratory intellect and intimate expressivity on the full range of the tenor. This is his ECM leader debut, following albums for the label in the cooperative trio Fly with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, and appearances on key recordings by Billy Hart, Enrico Rava and Stefano Bollani. Turner leads a quartet of kindred spirits here, often entwining in serpentine fashion with rising-star trumpeter Avishai Cohen. They play long, introspective lines of hypnotic grace; and with the lithe rhythm section of bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore, there is subtle volatility in the air.

The viola da gamba and the theorbo are string nobility: an artistic duo embodying the height of grandeur and sophistication. Indeed, the sense of intimacy that can arise between the two in French baroque repertoire provided the impetus for this recording. Though different in appearance and technique —one is bowed, the other plucked — both instruments have more in common than might at first seem.
The viola da gamba’s finest hour, however, both in terms of composition and performance, was undoubtedly the result of the work of one man, Marin Marais (1656-1728). It is of course possible to hear echoes, in Marais’ eccentric style of performance and composition, of his beloved and inspiring teacher Sainte Colombe (c. 1658–1701), about whose life and career we sadly know very little. It was however Sainte Colombe who pioneered the technical innovations needed to make expressive and virtuosic solo performance on the bass viol possible, e.g. by introducing silver-wound strings, which produced a more clearly defined sound. He also added an extra bass string and modified playing technique to allow the left hand to move more freely. Marin Marais’ haunting instrumental lament 'Tombeau de Ste Colombe' is a pupil’s enduring testament in honour of his master.

The song reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in August 1974. Second Helping also featured "Don't Ask Me No Questions," "Workin' for MCA" and "Call Me The Breeze," the latter of which includes an acclaimed piano solo. Backed by a tight rhythm section and the mighty three-guitar attack of Allen Collins, Ed King and Gary Rossington, singer Ronnie Van Zant turns in a legendary performance on the urgent blues ballad "I Need You," the cautionary "The Needle And The Spoon" and "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew." 200-gram vinyl, mastering by Kevin Gray, lacquer plating by QRP's Gary Salstrom, heavy, tip-on gatefold jacket. Luca Aquino - OverDOORS (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44.1kHz

Recorded: Rexrecord Studio, Telese, Benevento, Italy by Manlio Moscarino, October 2014

Tributes are a kind of fashion in jazz and today it’s cool to declare oneself a rockstar. That’s why I pulled myself back from dedicating an album to The Doors, my absolute favorite band, for such a long time. Then my love to Jim Morrison and his mates dominated. OverDOORS, despite facing some troubles at the beginning, has been growing strongly. The first doubt was wich songs to choose: I wish I could revisit them all. Under my fingers I had another doubt, due to the different possibilities of how to reinterpret the historical Californian band. For one month, only one question was on my mind: should I choose a cover approach or a free musical revision? I actually took both, wearing Converse, feeling free to analyse and fit back [Light My Fire], singing and whispering melodies both ethereal and eternal [like Blue Sunday and Yes, The River Knows]. I am curious to see my friends' reaction to the groove Waiting For The Sun; Carlo, Piero and all others, whom I dreamt with, sitting on a bench, flying on the notes of LA Woman. --Luca

Lou Donaldson Quintet - Wailing With Lou (1957/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Lou Donaldson Quintet
Title: Wailing With Lou
Genre: Jazz, Bop, Hard Bop, Saxophone Jazz
Label: © Blue Note Records
Release Date: 1957 (BLP 1545)/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC 2.0 Mono 192kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:37:11
Recorded: January 27, 1957 at Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey

Wailing With Lou is an appropriate title for this enjoyable set of straight-ahead bop. Whether he's riding the propulsive rhythms of "Caravan" or settling down into a ballad, Donaldson takes the center stage with his surprisingly full alto tone. He still displays a clear Charlie Parker influence, but he is beginning to break free and develop his own style. In particular, he relies on bluesy runs more than Bird, which give his music a soulful edge. But what makes Wailing With Lou so enjoyable is the hot interplay between Donaldson, trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Herman Foster, bassist Peck Morrison and drummer Art Taylor. All five musicians give enthusiastic, infectious performances. There's nothing out of the ordinary here -- just hard-driving bop and sensitive ballads, which are sure to please fans of the style. --Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Lou Donaldson - Swing And Soul (1957/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Lou Donaldson
Title: Swing And Soul
Genre: Jazz, Soul Jazz, Hard Bop, Saxophone Jazz
Label: © Blue Note Records
Release Date: 1957 (BLP 1566/BST 81566)/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:37:31
Recorded: June 9, 1957 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ.

One of the many alto players deemed a Charlie Parker descendant; Donaldson did indeed help carry the torch from the post-bop era but gradually infused more blues and eventually what was to become soul-jazz into his playing. This June 1957 session, cut in Hackensack, was a distinct departure from his previous dates for Blue Note. Pianist Herman Foster and conga player Ray Barretto, both of whom he would utilize on future recordings, are joined by the tasteful drummer Dave Bailey and bassist Peck Morrison to complete the quintet.

This was one of Donaldson's last sessions to incorporate piano, as he chose in the future to replace it with an organ, which fellow label-mate Jimmy Smith was making very popular. Not forsaking his bop roots altogether, Lou and crew mix it up on this set, with these originals, a mambo arrangement and a literally perfect rendition of 'There Will Never Be Another You.'

Lou Donaldson - Sunny Side Up (1960/2011) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 5 (tracks 3 & 6-8) and February 28 (tracks 1-2 & 4-5), 1960.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson recorded primarily either with his own quartet featuring pianist Herman Foster, or with organ trios. Occasionally, he'd change things up as he did on this 1960 session that was strictly a hard bop affair. Foster didn't take part in this recording; Horace Parlan replaced him at the piano and has been singled out by critics for his breathtaking performance. There's still plenty of funk in evidence on Goose Grease, but Hardman's Politely, Softly As In A Morning Sunrise and The Man I Love find Donaldson digging deep into his bop roots. In addition to Donaldson and Parlan, the rest of the quintet on this album includes Bill Hardman on trumpet, Laymon Jackson and Sam Jones splitting bass duties and Al Harewood on drums.
