Although they were born forty years apart on opposite sides of the world, Edvard Grieg and Percy Grainger have much in common. The aim to become pianists and composers more or less forced both of them to leave their native countries – Norway and Australia respectively – in order to gain access to the great central European tradition that so dominated musical life during the second half of the 19th century. Grieg enrolled at the Leipzig conservatory in 1858 and Grainger at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt in 1895, but their experiences were in many ways strikingly similar: both made progress as pianists, but neither of them found the German approach to the teaching of composition fruitful. Grieg’s strong attachment to Norwegian folk music made it difficult for him to compose in a way that conformed to the Germanic ideal, while Grainger some forty years later withdrew from the composition class at the conservatory in order to study privately. He too would find his greatest inspiration in folk music traditions, as exemplified in La Scandinavie for cello and piano, a suite of arrangements of Scandinavian folk songs. The two composers met in 1906, in London, and not surprisingly they got along famously. The meeting led to Grainger visiting Grieg in Bergen the following year, only two months before the older composer passed away. The Danish-Swedish cellist Andreas Brantelid and his Norwegian chamber music partner Christian Ihle Hadland have teamed up in this programme of cello works by the two composers, opening with Grieg’s celebrated Cello Sonata. They also include less well-known pieces, however, such as the composer’s arrangement of the Allegretto from his third violin sonata, and an Andante con moto intended as part of a never completed piano trio, in which they are joined by the violinist Lars Bjørnkjær. Discovered after Grieg’s death, the piece would have to wait more than 70 years before receiving its first performance.

Graham Parker & The Rumour - Mistery Glue (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

Mystery Glue from Graham Parker and the Rumour was written in Parker's second home of New York and recorded in only six days in London. The material is a real return to form for Parker and his powerhouse band, one of the UK's pioneering pre-punk outfits, often cited as a major influence on other artists including Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Paul Weller and Bruce Springsteen. Mystery Glue, featuring the Rumour's original 1970s lineup, is an album of conscious rock, harking back to Parker's genre-defining music of the '70s while paying homage to Dylan, reggae, soul and rock 'n' roll.

"When Swiss astrophysicist Fritz Zwicky described dark matter in the 1930s, he got the name wrong. It is of course 'mystery glue' that holds the universe together ... when I present new songs to the Rumour they work feverishly to make sense of them, often starting out with wildly disparate and alarmingly wrong diversions. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, everything falls into place, as if by dint of some Mystery Glue that holds us all together." --Graham Parker

Genre: Jazz, Post Bop, Piano Jazz
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Duration: 57:54
Recorded: July 2014 at Rainbow Studio, Oslo

In the realm of the piano trio the bar is set high, and creative bassist Gary Peacock has helped raise it in the groups of Bill Evans, Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett. 'Now This' is an album with the bassist's current trio, recorded in the summer of 2014 in Oslo and issued in time for Peacock's 80th birthday (on 12 May, 2015).

Powerful new versions of some Peacock classics - such as 'Moor', 'Vignette', 'Requiem' and 'Gaya' - are interspersed with recent compositions. Pianist Marc Copland and drummer Joey Baron each contribute tunes, and the group also tackles Scott La Faro's 'Gloria's Step'. In this band, roles are very evenly shared, and this is an optimum context in which to appreciate the melodic invention of Peacock's bass playing. Marc Copland always honours the needs of the compositions and Joey Baron supplies both drive and sensitive detail.

Set to vernacular texts dealing mainly with the theme of love, frottole were short, improvisatory polyphonic songs with instrumental accompaniment that flourished in the Renaissance courts of Italy for some forty years between c. 1480 and 1520. Despite its apparent simplicity, this completely new genre of song inspired some of Europe’s greatest vocal and instrumental musicians. The recent invention of movable type added further to its popularity. This recording explores a representative selection, including work published by the historically pivotal figure of Ottaviano Petrucci.

Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo - Almanac (2011) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88.2kHz

Artist: Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo
Title: Almanac
Genre: Folk, Pop Rock, World, Singer/Songwriter
Label: © Everyone Sang/Linn Records
Release Date: 2011
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 88,2kHz/24bit
Source: LINN
Duration: 41:20
Recorded: Cherif Hashizume @ Café Music Studio, Bow

Within 'Almanac' there are stories of love, renewal, the importance of community and our relationship to the earth. Shadowing these lighter themes are darker truths of untold atrocities committed by settlers on indigenous Australians during colonisation, the mass hysteria regarding a Scottish witch-hunt, flourishing love and good old-fashioned heartbreak.
Although fronted by Emily, this is definitely a group album, with the four members of Emily, Gill, Jo and Anna providing guitar, accordion & flute, cello and violin respectively, with backing vocals shared out across the eleven songs. The quartet are joined throughout the disc by guest musicians who add a range of guitars, percussion and double bass, that add depth and drive to the collection. Emily is a compelling songwriter with a gift for melody and words. Her talent is perfectly complimented by the magnificent arrangements of The Red Clay Halo. Throughout the album, the interplay between the band's rootsy ensemble playing, and Barker's agile vocal blend of strength and fragility, is effortlessly engaging. In moments when the four female voices combine to deliver arresting harmonies, it is simply blissful.
Highlights include the dreamy textures of ‘Billowing Sea', the nimble arrangements of ‘Reckless', and the atmospheric lyrics of ‘Witch of Pittenweem'. ‘Almanac' is a beautifully constructed and charming album, it certainly feels organic and natural, and the presentation of the songs is unaffected and with a real genuine air.
Upon its release 'Almanac' immediately attracted strong support from BBC Radio with sessions for Cerys Matthews on 6 Music and Radio 4's Loose Ends, and single 'Little Deaths' was picked as 'Record of the Week' on Nemone's 6 Music show. The album was also named 'Editor's Choice' by BBC Music Magazine.
