One of the very great pianists of the nineteenth century, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) achieved legendary status for his performances and improvisations alike, though his piano compositions generally have not withstood comparison with the very best keyboard music of the century. The one piano sonata he published was deemed not to have broken new ground after Beethoven’s path-breaking thirty-two; he created no large-scale cyclic works comparable to Robert Schumann’s hybrid literary/musical fantasies for the instrument; his meticulously crafted Lieder ohne Worte exuded for many a refined romanticism not as soul-searching as the miniatures of Chopin or Brahms; and nowhere did his technical demands on the pianist challenge the Promethean exertions of Liszt.

Time for Tyner is the ninth album by jazz pianist McCoy Tyner and his third released on the Blue Note label. It was recorded in May 1968 and features performances by Tyner with Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Lewis and Freddie Waits. The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection" calling it "a powerhouse performance from first to last."

On this new release, McCoy Tyner explores the art of the trio, with a dynamic set of 11 tracks that features new tunes from Tyner and Clarke.
McCoy Tyner with Stanley Clarke and Al Foster is a clear indication that Tyner's interests lie firmly in the future, and in his own compositions. In addition to two takes of "I Want to Tell You 'Bout That" (the first with Clarke on electric bass, the next on acoustic), other Tyner compositions include "Trane-like," "Once Upon A Time," "Goin' 'Way Blues," "Carriba" and "Memories." Tyner's unique and blazing interpretations of standards are apparent in his renditions of "Never Let Me Go" and "Will You Still Be Mine." Another highlight is Clarke's own "In the Tradition Of."
McCoy Tyner is assured of a major position in any jazz history of the 20th century—a versatile composer, arranger and leader whose distinctive sound looms over entire generations. He was born in Philadelphia in 1938 when Bud Powell, Benny Golson (and of course, John Coltrane) and many others were in the neighborhood. And Tyner is the only jazz giant to have honed his craft in, of all places, his mother's beauty parlor in West Philadelphia—jamming among the hair dryers and curling irons.
Stanley Clarke (born in 1951) is also from Philly, and on this project he plays mostly acoustic bass. Well known for his work with Return to Forever and as a trailblazing solo artist, Clarke continues to revolutionize his instrument. A first-generation fusion player who is constantly shifting directions, this project offers a rare opportunity to hear his more straight-ahead playing.
McCoy Tyner with Stanley Clarke and Al Foster is a brilliant second installment of Tyner's work on Telarc. Both discs make it clear that the undeniable talents of McCoy Tyner continue growing greater with time.

Ancalagon Records proudly announces its new SACD release, Schubert, featuring Berlin Philharmonic principal harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet, Deutsche Gramophone recording artist Anna Prohaska, soprano, Berlin Philharmonic principal cellist Ludwig Quandt, and Lara St. John, violin.
This second recording collaboration between Ancalagon Records and Langlamet gives a portrait of Schubert’s life from early to late in his short, prolific career. Langlamet does not arrange the keyboard parts, but performs them exactly as written by Schubert.

Merry Christmas is the first Christmas album and the fourth studio album by American singer Mariah Carey. Released by Columbia Records on November 7, 1994, the album features cover versions of popular Christmas tunes and original material. Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she wrote all of the original tracks, as well as producing Carey's interpretations of the covered material. The album contains a contemporary holiday theme, and featured "authentic, gospel flavored background vocals".
The album features instrumentation from keyboards, bass guitars, drums, percussion and heavy backing vocals. After its release, the album received generally positive reviews and became a worldwide success. Critics praised Carey's uplifting and flavored vocals, as well as her skilled songwriting alongside Afanasieff. Singles were released from the album, being sent to different radio stations for promotional purposes.
Merry Christmas was released at the peak of the initial stretch of Carey's career, between Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995). The album produced the worldwide classic single, "All I Want for Christmas Is You", which became the best-selling holiday ringtone in the US. The album has sold 5,370,000 copies in the United States as of November 2014 according to Nielsen SoundScan, and has been certified five-times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipment of five million copies in the United States. In Japan, Merry Christmas has sold 2,500,000 copies and is the third best-selling album of all time by a non-Asian artist, behind Carey's other release #1's (1998) and Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard. Merry Christmas has sold 15 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling Christmas album of all time.

Brazilian guitarist and composer Luiz Bonfa became world famous for his contributions to the soundtrack of the 1959 film Black Orpheus. He was one of the originators of the bossa nova sound and one of the greatest masters of Brazilian music popular of the 20th century. Even Elvis Presley recorded one of his songs! It’s often thought that critics work in isolation, and that a published opinion is merely the subjective impression of one individual. Maybe some do work that way, but I consider myself extremely fortunate to be in communication with colleagues or partners at and elsewhere–some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable people in the field. We enjoy discussing the merits of various recordings, and particularly before we give a disc a 10/10 rating we often consult to see if we agree. This is reflected, for example, in the “International Consensus” Disc of the Month selections, but that is only the tip of the critical iceberg. When it comes to repertoire very frequently recorded, such as the Liszt piano concertos, we often try to be extra careful, to be particularly clear about our reasons for awarding a new release our highest accolade.

This recording is the sequel to The Attaignant Consort’s first disc – Madame d’amours (RAM 0706) – and the third and last ina series of three recordings presenting the art of the Renaissance flute, both as solo instrument (RAM 1201) and as a consort instrument from the late fifteenth century until the middle of the seventeenth. This disc places the accent on the musical transition of the seventeenth century, and shows how the consort of flutes adapted to the new styles of composition, which pushed it to the very limits of its possibilities. This recording illustrates the repertory for flute consort from its beginnings, including examples of the first instrumental fantasias, of airs de cour in four voices, a suite of English songs, bicinia, and finally French airs enriched with Baroque ornaments from the early eighteenth century.
The ATTAIGNANT CONSORT was co-founded in 1998 by Kate Clark, Frédérique Chauvet, Marion Moonen and Marcello Gatti. Mathieu Langlois joined the ensemble in 2008. Drawn together by a fascination with the renaissance flute, they have collaborated over many years with the Italian flute-maker Giovanni Tardino, exploring the sound world of this, until now, little-known instrument. The ensemble's work has been greatly enriched by their long-standing collaboration with distinguished English lutenist Nigel North, begun in 2007. Each of the musicians in the Attaignant Consort has a multi-facetted musical career independent of the Consort: above all performers, their combined portfolios comprise outstanding achievements in the fields of teaching, conducting, ensemble direction, editing, writing and musicology. They come together for performances as the Attaignant Consort, sharing a deep love of the poetry and music of the Renaissance and early baroque. The Attaignant Consort works from facsimile editions of original part-books rather than scores, and performs as often as possible from memory, mindful of the aural tradition of learning in which many sixteenth-century instrumentalists were educated. The ensemble not only performs written diminutions from the period, but also those composed specially for it by Kate Clark. The ensemble's first CD Madame d'amours was released on the Ramee label, to broad critical acclaim, in October 2007.
